Smoking cannabis
Smoking is the most common method by which cannabis is consumed. It is mostly associated with recreational use due to the sought-after intoxicating effect that follows.
Smoking cannabis is not as harmful as smoking tobacco, however patients need to be aware that there are certain risks involved. There is a general consensus among medical practitioners that the smoke caused by burning plant matter contains carcinogens and tar. Smoke inhalation may lead to worsen certain respiratory conditions.
There are three common methods of smoking cannabis:
Pipes - Tube through which combusted cannabis can be inhaled.
Pros: Dosage is more predictable
Lower cannabis usage
Quick and convenient
Cons: Combusted plant matter is directly inhaled
Dirty pipes could cause a bacterial infection
Joints - A hand rolled cigarette containing cannabis either in its pure form or mixed with tobacco and/or other herbs.
Pros: Easily disposable, patient can titrate dosage
Cons: Usually rolled without a filter
Bongs - pipes where the smoke passes through water before being inhaled.
Pros: The smoke is cooled down when it passes through the water.
Cons: Some THC may be lost to the bong itself.
Dirty bongs may cause bacterial infections
Smoke passing through the water is not filtered
Smoking is the least desirable treatment option due to the listed concerns. Before pursuing this method of treatment patients are advised to consult their doctors and do some further research.
