Because of the difficulty involved in successfully lodging a section 21 application most patients are forced to acquire medical cannabis illegally. This brings up a number of issues patients need to be aware of:
It is illegal to obtain cannabis without a permit, patients run the risk of arrest and prosecution.
Dealing with the criminal black market can lead to dangerous situations.
The lack of legal regulation means that there are no specific quality standards for cannabis in South Africa. Patients run the risk of ingesting tainted or low quality cannabis.
